At Greytown School, we are a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) school. This school-wide approach provides a safe, consistent, and supportive environment for students and staff and is based on a nationwide initiative. Our focus is to proactively teach and encourage positive behaviour and responsible decision-making in all situations. We work alongside students, parents, whānau, and our wider community to reinforce these expectations. We believe this partnership helps our children become truly SHARP learners who make positive choices instinctively and have the confidence to stand up for themselves and others when needed. Our school values are based on the acronym SHARP.
As part of our PB4L approach, we love recognising and celebrating students who consistently demonstrate our school values through their actions.
One of the ways we do this is through our whole-school Token Box Rewards. Token boxes are kept in the office, and students earn tokens whenever they demonstrate positive behaviour, kindness, responsibility, effort, and great decision-making around the school.
Once a token box is full, students vote for a fun whole-school reward. These rewards are chosen by students and change each time, keeping things exciting and motivating. Past rewards have included daytime discos, non-uniform days, Where’s Wally Day, water activities, Wheels Days, and many other creative ideas.
Our Token Box Rewards help build a positive school culture where students feel recognised, valued, and excited to contribute to our supportive learning environment.
- We strive to be proactive and fair when responding to inappropriate behaviour. Our leadership team regularly reviews our behaviour recording and analysis processes to ensure they meet the needs of both students and staff.
- Our staff participate in ongoing professional learning to support the educational and social wellbeing of every child.
- Repeated minor incidents and all major behaviour events are recorded in HERO using the School-Wide Information System (SWIS). This information is reviewed monthly by the Senior Leadership Team to identify trends, support classes, and respond proactively to behaviour across the school.
- Positive behaviour is recognised and celebrated through a wide range of rewards and reinforcement strategies.
- For most everyday behaviour incidents, our focus is on helping students learn from their mistakes and take responsibility for future choices. Where behaviour is serious or places others at risk, consequences are applied in accordance with our school behaviour procedures to ensure a safe learning environment for everyone.
