Enviroschools
Naumai, haere mai ki te whanau o te kura o Greytown. Welcome to the Greytown School Family.
One of the fantastic things about our school is that we are a Green Gold Enviroschool. This means we are working towards making our school as environmentally sustainable as possible. In the process of this we do lots of learning and have fun at the same time.
Some of the projects we have so far are:
We are a Trees for Survival School. In our shade house we grow native tree seedlings to plant out in our local area. Lots of our seedlings go to the Makoura Stream restoration project.
At the south end of the school we have the Matariki Garden.
The vegetable garden grows a range of vegetables. One year we grew enough pumpkins to make pumpkin soup for the whole school! We have two dedicated parents who come in once a week and help a group of children in the garden. The Envirogroup is made up of kids from all through the school. They are fully involved in making all of the projects happen. They are encouraged to take ownership, plan, problem solve and promote their projects.
Recycle, reuse and reduce are ways we can create less rubbish for the landfills. Each class has a set of bins into which we sort our rubbish: white for paper, green for food for the worm farm and red for things we have to send to the tip.
Here are some things you can do to help us reduce the amount that goes into the red bins.
Buy a large container of yoghurt and spoon some into a screw top reusable container for school. Buy a large bag of chippies and give your child a few in a ‘snap-lock’ reusable bag.
Use paper lunch wrap, reusable plastic bags or sandwich-size container for sandwiches.
Avoid the treat food that is individually packaged. This is wrapped in non-biodegradable packaging and creates a lot of rubbish.
These ways of packing school lunches have the added bonus of being cheaper.
We encourage the children to take home the ‘rubbish’ that is left over from their lunches. This is also a good way for you to keep track of what your child is eating.
See what has been happening this year on
We thank you for supporting our school in our journey towards sustainability.
